When thinking about social media and what technology has become, it kind of really does seem bizarre. Look at the evolution of it all… myspace, facebook, twitter, Instagram, snapchat, not to mention the vines and periscopes that exist/existed and BLOGS can’t forget about the blogs. It’s all so much and it has influenced us and changed our lives completely whether you want to admit it or not.
Myspace is when I really started to get into entertainment. I thought I wanted to be a radio personality and followed all these different DJs and hosts thinking I had to be just like them in order to make it. Then twitter came and made me feel so connected to everyone, way more than facebook or myspace ever made me feel. Around the same time I got into Twitter I also got into blogs, mainly one, The Sartorialist. His blog changed my life. I began to look at style and fashion in a completely different way. It became more beautiful, more detailed, and really important to me. Another thing Sart did for me was intro the one and only Garance Dore who’s blog took my life to a whole other level. Sart elevated my taste, but Garance showed me that there was a whole big world out there and EVERYONE was trying to figure it all out including herself. I’ve been an avid Garance Dore reader ever since. I wish I could one day tell her how she changed my life and she’s my best friend in my head, but I’m sure she gets those words said to her very often as she has meant so many things to so many people. Blogs were a deeper way for people to connect. It was an intimate thing on a very public platform.
Then there’s Instagram. It has become the ultimate social media tool that can do it all. The carefully curated IG accounts fill your feed with things you absolutely need (WANT). The place where people become influencers and sell you things via pretty overlays/ADs that is what Instagram has become. Everyone’s life seems perfect on there and you try to reflect the same. You almost can’t help it. The carefully curated IG thing just sucks you in. I feel like people don’t even go on blogs anymore. People just want to look at your pretty pictures and look at where you bought those pretty things via Tags. No need to visit fashion blogs anymore, because IG has it all (I’m being really sarcastic). Seriously though, IG has made blogs really have to figure out their lane. Either you’re a Garance and you actually talk about real life things and build that genuine connection with people or your just another fashion blog without much to say.
And then there’s THE Snapchat, as my mom would say. Snapchat allows you to immediately share any moment in your life and it disappears in 24hours. People want more than pictures; they want instant videos of you living your life. It’s a peak into strangers and friends everyday lives. It’s creepy but so intriguing and plus it’s another place to drop selfies/selfie videos (sooo vain, I know). Snapchat plays into the curiosity we all have about what others are doing (not just celebrities).
Social media definitely has it’s pros and cons. Some of the pros being spreading awareness etc, cons being THIS ELECTION, but needless to say the impact it has on our daily lives is huge. How has if affected you? Do you think social media is more of a positive than a negative?
